condenser or evaporator, how to tell? Posted by TML [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
After replacing the receiver drier, then having the fuel pump fail and replacing that, I'm back to the a/c. The only things left are the condenser and the evaporator.
-verified mixing flap is working correctly; I had the evaporator removed and was manually adjusting the flap and verified the vent air blew ~50C at full open, and ~23C at fully closed, which is about the temperature of the engine compartment air that the fan was drawing from.
-substituted in the second new expansion valve, pulled a vacuum on the system, and re-charged. Pressures look good, 40/160psi at 15C ambient.
-vent air temp is ~23C on LO and ECON, ~18C on LO and AUTO, so some minimal cooling is happening
-the small, high pressure line to the expansion valve is very hot, the large low pressure line coming from the expansion valve is cool but not cold enough. I don't know which is the cause and which is the effect.
When I had the evaporator out, I blew compressed air through it. It didn't seem to be clogged, but there's actually seven tubes coming off the main inlet and outlet, so theoretically 6 out of 7 could be clogged and I wouldn't be able to tell. I think the really hot tube going to the expansion valve points to the condenser not cooling properly, but maybe that's just wishful thinking since that's a $150 part vs the $700 evaporator. Any suggestions as to further tests or interpretation of tests would be appreciated.
