Theres a lot of FUD out there about switching. The reality is that there won't be any problem at all, unless it's the crud that's keeping your engine from leaking. That said, with conventional oil, you'll be just fine, as long as you keep to the 3K interval. I personally would run an engine flush before switching, and dump the first batch of synthetic at 1K or so, the next at 3K, and the third, depending on the oil and filter used, and your specific engine, you can probably run for 10K or a year without issue.
There are two classes of lube sold as "synthetic" in the states: Class III base-stock, is hydrocracked mineral oil. This is better than non synthetic, but isn't at all the same thing as Class IV PAO, which is synthesized from Ethylene. Conventional motor oil gets thicker as it wears. PAO based oil doesn't wear out, it becomes contaminated.
