Had to remove cat before shipping my SAAB overseas when I was in the USAF. Back then, Euro cars, including SAAB's, did not have cats, but did have O2 sensors. O2 sensors have been in use since the 80's and SAAB was among the first to use them. I used leaded fuel for as long as it was available because the unleaded fuel at the time had a low octane rating. The recommended sensor change interval for that vintage is around 50,000 miles, IIRC. This takes into consideration contamination from deposits of lead and other contaminants such as carbon etc. A lot of people have had success cleaning the sensor with a propane torch. I'd try that if I were you. Sounds like your car is getting terrible mileage if it improves with the sensor disconnected. Usually, it's the other way around... worse mileage with sensor disconnected. Though Euro SAAB's and USA SAAB's had different part number ECU's , this was due to the Euro SAAB's having more power due to increased boost since they didn't have cats. HTH
