Loosen the serp belt and see if there's any play in the shaft of the pump by grabbing hold of the pulley and seeing if it moves in and out or side to side. This may give you a hint about what's going on.
Is there any sign of leakage around the shaft? If you have a leak starting it's really on its way south.
I had a pump fail on me on a trip last year. No real noise except at start-up but it started leaking and finally died 200 miles later as I pulled into a repair place.
And fluid coming out with the engine running is normal.
