Search the archives for zeke. IIRC he put a complete 98 drivetrain into an 88.
There are a lot of posts on auto to manual swaps. I bought an 89 that had had one done but they'd neglected to change the carrier bearing mount which caused alignment problems and subsequent output shaft bearing damage. I fixed that and took the car to 256k before rust killed it.
Bottom line is there are a number of swap options, but they could take a lot more time and effort than you might anticipate. That said the early 9ks are great. My daily driver is a 96 and I'm fixing up a 98, but I still have an 88 I'd like to get back on the road again.
