Lousy AM radio reception - - anything to be done?

Sunday afternoon, I was cruising up Rte. 1, listening on the stock Clarion in my '96 to the FM station that has the New England Patriots feed from WEEI, and all early afternoon they had been blathering along about the coming game - - right up till 5 minutes of 3, kickoff, when suddenly without explanation it cut off and we got their standard rock and roll format feed throughout the game.
I guess they got embargoed by the Westwood One affiliate, at 970 AM, which was also carrying the game. So I punched the band button and tuned in to 970, to find it just appallingly bad, losing signal about 20 miles from the town it broadcasts from. And almost no other AM stations to be found, listenable.
Shows you how much AM I consume. Not that into canned talk formats, right wing or anything else.
But I wonder if it isn't a problem with the radio, or the antenna. I kind of recall something similar in the past from a bad cable from radio to antenna itself. Do these run thru a clear enough path on the 9000 that I could possibly replace mine by pulling a new one through, hooking it onto the old one? I don't want to have to pull carpets, really, though I would pull sill plates and tip carpet back if it runs up the side.
