Preventative maintenance Posted by John Fitzgerald [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: eeuro 10% off expiring tonight... what to buy?, rob 96 aero, Tue, 31 Jan 2012 14:14:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Depends on how much you prefer to do as preventative rather than as things fail.
If you've taken great care of the cooling system, you might get another 15k to 30k out of the water pump, heater core, etc. my radiator in my '97 Aero is still original at 217k miles, but I did switch to Dexcool and distilled water quite early in it's life at 20k. Did the water pump at 140k plus a bunch of hoses; heater core at 147k when the blower motor went.
I did the alternator at 126k. Ordered another one today. Access to the VR is so tough, I'd rather put a rebuilt alternator in.
Sep belt, tensioner, idler pulleys: I do them at a 60k interval.
AC compressor is original, as is the PS pump. I do change the PS filter at 30k and flush the fluid every two years.
DI cassettes can go well over 100k; no worries as long as you keep a used spare in the trunk. They can also fail in less than 10,000 mi. Use Saab OE cassettes. Tried a cheaper, $175 version made in Taiwan last summer. It lasted 7k. At least Autohaus.az stood by their warranty and I recd a full refund.
Lots of little stuff goes in annoying lumps, usually just after you order the big stuff for free shipping. Keep a few various relays for the fuel pump, etc, the washer check valves for either the reservoir or at the hood, spare vacuum line, a set of plugs, wiper blades, fasteners (under air dam plastic diaper shroud, fender liner bolts, nuts, etc).
Pads, rotors ... PBR deluxe or MetalMaster with Brembo rotors. As needed ... Again, are you going to do it in a year?
Part of the answer to costs will be what happens to the dollar and the euro. And that depends on Greece, Germay, the rest of the EU AND the results of our next presidential election. A weak Euro and strong dollar will make the prices drop somewhat. There's should be ScanTech type aftermarket spares for a while, even if Saab stays failed. Then there's EBay.
Best of luck,
Sincerely,
John Fitzgerald
Lots of Saabs, currently a '97 Aero with 217000 mi
Pads and rotors: if it's going to be done in the next six months, get the parts you need now.
