The fuel pump in one of my 9ks died suddenly at about that mileage, so I preemptively replaced the one in my other 9k, which was at about 150k. I replaced just the pump, not the whole assembly. This is NOT a roadside repair. At a minimum you need a heat gun or butane torch, a variety of pliers, side cutters, an exacto knife, ring remover tools, a ratchet, a supply of plastic or rubber fuel hose (and hose clamps if using rubber), spray lubricant, vise grips, a good light source, and more that I can't even remember. This assumes you're not going to break anything, and it's not going to be raining on you.

However, if you buy the whole assembly, it could be feasible with just the remover tools, ratchet, lubricant and vise grips. The extra cost of buying the whole assembly would make carrying it as a backup impractical, IMO. I would recommend just replacing the pump, but do it when you've got a few days that you can go without the car, otherwise buy the replacement feed and return elbows just in case.
