Squawk from pully area after going up Mtn Pass

The other day I was driving up I-70 from Denver and decided to stop for food in Dillon. There is a long climb to get to the Eisenhower tunnel and the engine temp came up to almost 9 o'clock and was there for about 20 min until I started going back down hill. When I came to the first stop light in town I noticed a steady chirping/squawking noise. I popped the hood and let it idle and the noise was coming from the pulley area. To me, it did not sound like a squeal from belt slippage (belt is fairly recent) but more like a squawking or dull chirping... it was constant at idle and with light revs got louder. This was quite concerning but it was getting late and I needed to get home so I drove away with it making a fair bit of noise. However, the noise stopped at some point on the remaining drive back (about 2 hours) and I haven't heard it at all since then. I'm thinking if I drove it under similar conditions it would return...
Anyone have a guess? I suppose I could replace the serp and idle pulleys and see what happens. I haven't done them since I bought the car at 147K, now at almost 180k. I was just hoping the constant load and higher engine temps that seemed to trigger it would give a clue.
TIA
