Before assuming that it's the A/C compressor (probably the most expensive part in the path), have you tried pulling the belt and spinning all of the pulleys by hand, including the alternator and the power steering pump? Or tried listening through a stethoscope of a short piece of garden hose?
If you have no idea on the age of the tensioner or idler pulleys and the belt, suggest that you change these ASAP. Note that the only failure that I have had on my belt system was the failure of an SKF (OEM supplier) idler pulley at about 45,000 miles - wife was driving car, she didn't notice anything (i.e. no loud noises) other than "it was hard to steer".
