I *think* an ECU from a 5-speed will work in an automatic, but not vice versa. 1996 and 1997 model years are compatible. However, what is really driving your fuel consumption is those huge injectors - they are about twice the size of stock. If you install a stock ECU - assuming that it is one that is compatible with your car, say to be certain you picked up an ECU from a 1996-1998 CSE or Aero automatic - it will not run right with those injectors. If you want to save fuel, get smaller injectors, and a custom tune to match your injectors to your turbo. (It's also a pretty huge turbo). If you go changing the turbo too, then you maybe may as well have bought a different car... Try JZW or any of the other reputable tuners. If you're in MA, I know somebody who could put something suitable together for you for reasonable money, I'm sure, though I'm guessing you're not since you say 13 L/100 KM (about 18 MPG in US speak). This is not great mileage, especially at current fuel prices, but I doubt you will get significantly better than 22-23 highway with that big turbo. I know that's 20%. The additional ECU, properly tuned, with Green Giant injectors will probably pay for itself in 12,000 miles or so. If you're planning to pick up a different car for a daily driver anyway, it may not be worth the trouble, just enjoy all the power you have and try to not think too much about the gas you're burning.
