1994 Aero cranks but won't start

The car is a 1994 9000 Aero, no TCS,5 speed. For a year now it has decided at times it doesn't want to start. The car will crank and crank and crank but will not start. It happens so rarely that I haven't put the effort into tracking down the problem. Recently, it has happened several times, each time if the car is jumped, it will start. The one piece of info I feel is important is that the positive battery cable has been replaced. However, it still builds up corrosion. I can clean the cable on Monday and by Friday it's back to the way it was. I'm thinking about replacing the starter, but after reading through the archives I'm confused. If the car cranks, the starter is working.....in any case, any info or thoughts on the matter is greatly appreciated!
