Blower motors are a rite of passage (along with heater cores) in 9000 wrenching.
Check the archives for oodles of posts on the not-very-fun procedure. But to summarize what you're experiencing: when the blower motor starts its decline, it continues to operate, but draws excessive current to do so. Eventually this excessive current, flowing through the fan speed resistor, fries the resistor. In these cases you need to replace the blower motor AND the resistor to restore proper fan operation. They can fail by either killing the fan, or by having the fan run on high speed all the time, refusing even the "OFF" command from the ACC.
Sounds like you may be lucky in that your resistor is still working. If you promptly replace the blower motor, you will probably not have to replace the resistor. But if you wait too long, the resistor will likely be ruined. There is a cheap fix for the resistor (again search archives) but there is no escaping the blower motor replacement. If you just replace the resistor now, then it's only going to get fried again unless the blower motor is replaced.
Good luck!
