It depends on which version of the T5Suite manual you're reading. My copy (revision 1.23) requires 3" from the turbo back for Stage 3, among other changes.
I can get by with 2.5" from the Cat back to do a Stage 2. The difference in material cost between 2.5" and 3" won't matter to me, and I won't mind the extra loudness. I don't like the extra weight, but deleting the resonator should offset the heavier pipes. If I decide later to go for Stage 3 or higher, then I'll already be part way there. It's more like slight overkill than stove pipes.
