Two things, I'm thinking.

The coolant leak is super critical so you don't kill the engine. Fix this ASAP, then worry about heat.
It is either a hose, the radiator, or more likely at 170K, the heater core. The hoses from the engine to the heater core can leak, especially at the joints, so you may get lucky, but if you're smelling coolant the core is more likely. My write up for the job is linked below. It's not really a hard job, just awkward, annoying and takes some time.
Next, if you don't get heat the air control box behind the dash is the likely culprit, or more accurately the flaps that control the air flow. They are controlled by the ACC (which can also fail), but you may be able to work around a failed ACC. Since you said you got heat with a full load of coolant, the problem is more likely the core.
Buy the full kit from eEuroparts and plan on a few hours of quality time with your car. The standard kit with the core that has plastic ends is fine unless you plan to keep the car for 10 years.
