Could be the pilot bearing.

You say it's a speed dependent sound- if you get going fast (60 MPH or so) and then put the clutch in and coast, does the noise change? Does it change pitch as the car decelerates?

If it does, then assuming the noise is coming from the clutch area, I'd suspect either the pilot bearing, or perhaps something in the differential or intermediate shaft support bearing.

If the noise goes away when the clutch is pushed in, then I would suspect something inside the gearcase.

You mentioned that it makes a noise when you had it at idle and the hood open. Would I be correct to assume that you had it in neutral and the car wasn't moving at that point?

Think about what would be rotating at that point : the engine, flywheel, clutch, pilot bearing. Perhaps the starter if the starter pinion didn't fully retract.

What wouldn't be rotating would be the axles, intermediate shaft, differential, and all the gears in the gearcase.
