That does suck. I agree with the other posters that if you ask the operators they'll probably be willing to put a hold on a car for a little while. After all they like to make money, but it is a fast turnover business. There are different kinds of scrap yards, some are very focused on the parts, some go straight to the crusher, and a lot are in between and just try to squeeze a few extra bucks from parts with their main business being the metal.

Scrap value is so high now that it's really changed the dynamic of bottom of the market cars. That 9k is worth at least $300 in scrap, probably closer to $400 with alloy rims. Plenty of old cars are going to the shredder now that would have been left alone a few years ago.
