I got the impression that sam's primary motivation was reduced maintenance and repair by not having to deal with rusted out center mufflers in the future, and it seems reasonable to also report on the side effects of this (noise and performance impact).
That said, I don't think a completely silent car is an ideal. Sound is part of the experience of operating the car, and like other feedback it gives can be both useful and pleasurable. My guess is when he says 'it is not louder inside the car' really means he can't hear it at idle or cruise, but can hear it more when opening things up a bit. Certainly nothing wrong with that, and I think it's safe to say that level of noise is comparable to many stock vehicles and isn't going to bother anyway (unlikely Harley and fart-can civic, where I completely agree with you). I have a stock exhaust by the way, but sometimes think a little more auditory feedback would be nice when driving in a sporting way (which is pretty infrequently these days I'm afraid).
