Back in August I replaced the serp belt tensioner, shock, belt and pulleys on daughter's '96 CS. All was good.

Fast forward to last night, 2:30 AM. Daughter calls saying the belt had come off. We AAA it home and I look at it today. From the top I could see the tensioner pulley is clearly angled outwards. Behind the front fender liner, I find that the aluminum base of the tensioner is broken into three pieces and the pulley has pulled away from the base by maybe 1/4 inch. The section behind the pivot point is still attached to the tensioner assembly; the rest of the aluminum base is still attached to the engine.

The curious part is that the metal arm from the pivot point of the tensioner to the top of the shock was missing. The bottom bolt at the pivot point was gone but the bolt at the top of the shock is still there.

So I'm thinking I had a brain cramp and didn't tighten the top and bottom bolts properly. This let the tensioner develop some lateral movement and the bolts --especially the bottom one-- backed off and the arm was just hanging free. This would change the tension and over a couple thousand miles the loose arm, swinging every which way, must have caught on something (like the belt) and been yanked in a way that broke the top of the arm where it connects to the shock. The top shock bolt *did* come undone very easily. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense to me, but I'm pretty good about tightening stuff down and checking it twice. And it's been at least 2000 miles.

It's just weird.

I got a used arm from a guy I know and I'm buying a new tensioner. I'll be using some Loctite blue on the bolt at the pivot point and maybe the top one, too.
