Our 97 has always had leaking - seeping issues with water pump coupler at the block. No amount of cleaning up, replacing 0-rings and pumps, or using sealers stopped the leak for long. Once had the pump out 3 times trying to dry it up. Finally used a couple tablets of stop leak, it took a took a week or so for it to stop dripping. If it starts again will add a couple more. Don't believe in using any more of that stuff than necessary. Certainly not by the handful like some do. Their philosophy is if it doesn’t stop leaking right away, dump in another couple hands full. When the heater core is plugged they blame it on the Stop Leak. More is not better.
Can only guess there is something wrong with the machined port in the block. It is hard to see in there, but could not see anything in the way of porosity, poor machining, or corrosion pitting, etc. Possibly there is enough thermal expansion movement between the pump and block that the O-rings have a hard time maintaining a seal. Made a sanding drum out of a hole saw blade, in an effort to clean up the block bore. The bore looked clean but still leaked. Have used sealer on the o-rings, latest was Permatex Water pump & thermostat housing RTV gasket, #22071. They claim this is their most antifreeze resistant sealer, Mike will see.
