I just replaced the right side tank strap on my car (do a search). I have no idea how long it was broken, it made no unusual noise, saw the issue when fixing the exhaust. The good news on the right side is that the tank is held up somewhat by the filler neck and the handbrake cable, but I won't say that this is the most secure arrangement, particularly with a full tank of gas.

Connection points for the strap:
1. The front connection is a rectangular ring that fits over a protruding fitting attached to the body.
2. The rear connection is a approximately 1.5" long screw pointing downwards, I believe that is M8x1.25 thread. A right-angled fitting fits over the screw and a nut tensions it. Chances are that this screw will be quite rusty and may be easy to break.

One idea for what you could do on a temporary basis: patch the existing strap. My strap rusted through and broke in the middle, the ends were still fine as was most of the strap except where it broke. Get a piece of strapping of some sort (steel, nylon webbing, etc.), raise the tank carefully with a floor jack and a piece of plywood to distribute the load in order to prevent tearing the tank bottom. Drill holes in the existing broken strap near the ends leaving the connections intact and some holes in your patching strap. Insert some bolts/nuts through both straps.
