I owned an '86 9k for several years. It was, in fact, my first Saab.
Here's the deal :
There was just one variant of the 9000 in it's first year - I think the only option might have been the sunroof. It had cloth manually adjusted seats, manual transmission on all '86s.
No ABS, but otherwise the brakes are similar to the other '80s 9ks.
The T3 turbo is oil cooled only, but as others have mentioned, it seems to be pretty durable.
160 HP stock, but the APC Red box is directly swapable from the c900. The LH 2.2 system is very similar overall to the c900's.
On my car, I had a lot of electrical issues, though these were fairly easy to resolve.
The A/C system, however was more of a problem. At some point it was converted from R-12 to R-134a, but the system never worked too well while I owned it.
Other issues such as the 'lazy steering rack' when cold, fuel pump, and rust around the wheel arches are common to this Saab as they are to all later ones.
Great car, though! In some ways, thought I couldn't pinpoint how, I thought the build quality on it was better than on my '92 9000 turbo.
