Leaking inner driver seal?

The left-hand inner driver seal appears to be leaking badly on my '86 9000 Turbo with 100k miles. Left a nice big puddle under the car. This the first time I've experienced this type of failure in any car, including the many Saabs I've owned. I was able to find both seals today (one of them is NLA) and it doesn't seem like it will be too hard to DIY. Would something cause this to happen, like a bad differential bearing? Or do these seals just sometimes let go suddenly.
My recent struggles with this car have inspired a blog post (linked below). I still love it, though.
