That’s an issue with the alignment marks, they can be aligned with the pump cocked = tilted back at the bottom. When the pump is in the proper position it sits level down in the mounting hole. Unfortunately the retaining ring screws on without any problem when the pump is cocked.
When changing the pump, the exposed gas should be respected, but with some precautions is not an issue. For one thing, the gas vapors are heavier than air so they tend to stay in the tank. To help keep the vapors in the tank, cover the hole with something like a snug fitting Tupper ware lid (don’t tell her what you did with it). Keep the hatch and car doors open, and anything like a hot drop light away from the tank area. Also it is a good idea not to have the ignition key in the lock. When you pull the old pump out, place it in a bucket or in a plastic bag and immediately take it outside to drain and air out. With a few precautions changing the pump is not that hazardous.
