Ok, first I am lucky to have two nearly identical 1998 CSE's. My parts car is an automatic with a blown head gasket (186,000 miles) while my primary is a manual that just passed 200,000 miles.
I swapped the front struts (parts car had nice Bilstein HD's), and my Indy had told me to expect needing a drivers side axle (cv boot tore open, he replaced it, so saw the cv joint). So, I decided I would try to swap the axle from my parts car once I started getting slight clicking from the cv joint. I was successful, except for what I took to be wheel bearing noise. So I swapped the entire steering knuckle, complete with ball joint and bearing. Still heard the bearing noise (sort of a speed-dependent whine that starts at about 5-10mph) pretty loud. So put back the original axle, realized that I had damaged the bearing; inner race was physically loose. Drove it that way for about 100 miles before I could replace the original steering knuckle/ball joint/bearing assembly. Back to where I started, right? Except I am still getting some minor noise from the original bearing (which had been silent before I started swapping parts).
1) yes, I have made sure the axle nut was tight each time I reassemble
2) yes I packed the inner tripod with plenty of grease (axle splines greased also)
3) yes all connections secure (ball joint bolts, strut bolts, tie rod end)
Questions:
1) is the axle different for the automatic compared to the manual?
2) is it possible to put too much grease into the inner tripod bearing during reassembly?
3) other than under-tightening the axle bolt, is there any way to damage the wheel bearing during these reassembly procedures?
4) given that there was no clicking of the cv joint when I had the parts car's axle installed, is there any other explanation for the whining noise? (whining noise always speed sensitive, gear/clutch independent, brake independent etc).
5) I have re-used the axle nut each time, no loosening has occured. How long can I keep reusing it? I will get a new one with a new axle...as I am guessing I will need to spring for axle and wheel bearing soon!
Tips:
1) used a four-foot extension pipe with my 1/2" drive socket wrench and 32mm socket to get off the axle nut with not much trouble.
2) used the same set-up to loosen the strut bolts (18mm socket)
3) didn't need to disconnect tie rod end to get axle out of bearing
4) axle comes out easily after inner cv boot strap is removed (get your finger in behind the rubber lip, gently break the grease seal, and the tripod bearing end of the axle comes out of the inner carrier like a boot coming out of deep mud!). Pays to have a piece of cardboard under that to catch runny grease that comes out of the inner cv boot/inner carrier.
Thanks in advance.
Long live saabnet and 9000's!
