but they usually aren't in New England. And the good 9Ks in New England (like mine) aren't for sale. As much as I love 9Ks, it's just too hard to find a good one and most will need a cash infusion to get them into good shape. And we've been looking....

My daughter's '96 CS was totaled in December and I didn't want to work through another 9K of uncertain history. So I'm getting her a well-maintained '00 9-3 SE from a southern state. It's within her budget, has the hatch she insists on, and is a Saab. If she had more to spend (I'm buying it, she's paying me back) I'd probably get her a 9-5 wagon as that fits her outdoorsy activities.

That said, my indy is selling a 2001 9-5 wagon with about 125K on it. Has had a bunch of recent service and is in good shape. I don't know if the oil pan was dropped for a sludge check, but it was a customer's car that he's serviced it for years and I think he said it was OK. Click the link by my name and I can tell you how to reach him. I have no connection with the car.

FWIW, my wife has an '03 9-5 wagon and while it's very different than a 9K, it's a great car and has been very reliable for the past 7 years and 77K miles. Pretty much normal maintenance. If my 9K died tomorrow I'd get a 9-5 wagon in a heartbeat.

However.... the best approach is to buy a car from outside New England. Just a little ways south is fine, like NJ or PA, so you are out of the heavy salt belt. Buying a car remotely can be a bit scary, although there are folks here who may be willing to check out a car for you if you ask.
