Rust - arrgh! Posted by JerseySaab [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Any tips on AC condenser fan removal?, TML ![]() ![]() |
I can pretty much see what needs to be done, but of course being a Northeast car all the fasteners are badly rusted.
I had to use a Dremel to get coolant and intercooler hoses off, the hose clamps were mostly rust. The hoses are detached, coolant drained, oil cooler detached from the radiator, and the radiator fan is out.
Next I need to tackle those long bolts at the bottom that hold the radiator, intercooler, and condenser together; they are of course also a mass of rust. I have them soaking in Kroil penetrant, but figure they will probably just snap and I'll replace them, will try to find stainless steel bolts.
The radiator is a Valeo brand and may well be the original, I'm thinking of replacing it "just because" -- although it looks in decent shape, I really don't want to have to go back in there for a while.
I'm thinking of the condenser fan as well, though that appears to be OK (turns smoothly with no bearing noise or roughness). New ones are a little pricey though.
