Well, to many old-time Volvo owners, brought up on the "red block" 4, almost ANYTHING different was tantamount to selling out to the devil, much like the Saab/Opel V6 is to Saabers brought up on the inline 4 (or, for that matter, the inline 4 is to Saabers brought up on the V4, or the V4 is to 2-stroke owners. You get the picture...).
Like the Saab V6s, the Volvo "white block" 6 doesn't put up with lack of maintenance well. On top of that, the original 960s head, while an interesting engineering exercise, was a maintenance nightmare, and if not put back together in exactly the proper manner would leak oil like a sieve.
The Red Block is a non-interference design (well, the 8 valve, anyway...), so, if the timing belt breaks, no big deal, just pull over and install your spare. Not so much with the white block.
It is interesting that Saab was able to get folks to buy-in on the 16valve motors, while Volvo couldn't. Their 16v 4 didn't last very long. Volvo didn't, however, turbocharge their 16v, which may have been part of the problem. It wasn't till Volvo killed off the red block that the cars all got 4 valves per cylinder.
You would have thought that Volvo would have been happy to put a 140-150HP 16v non-turbo in a wagon in the middle 90s. But they didn't. My 1995 940 wagon had a 114HP 8v... Slow doesn't begin to describe...
