If you google "obd2 application linux" (without quotation marks) you'll find some applications that will work on your laptop. Maybe all you'll need is a cheap obd2 dongle and an open source linux application.
If bluetooth isn't supported on your laptop then there are versions of Elm327 that support USB. There is a lag with bluetooth based on a couple of youtube videos I've seen, but it is within a second or two of giving real time feedback.
The check engine light that stays steady on is not a crisis. If it flashes then you have something more serious like a misfire. On our cars it does not monitor oil pressure, which doesn't make a lick of sense.
The Russian site that has all the '97 wiring diagrams includes one showing all of the ground locations. It will be useful if you haven't already downloaded it. I hope whatever is causing your codes will reveal itself without much diagnostic work.
