Using a volt meter, with the engine not running you should see 12-12.5 volts at the battery terminals. With the engine running you should see 13.6 - 14.2 volts. Low voltage with the engine off may indicate a bad battery, and low voltage with the engine running may indicate a bad voltage regulator or bad alternator.
