Well, the resistance of the heating elements is about 2.5 ohm each, so I got something close to that and figured 100 watts should (hopefully) be sufficient capacity.
The two seats share a 20 amp fuse, so that's 240 watts maximum at a nominal 12 volts, or 120 watts per seat total. They probably draw a few amps less than that or fuses would be constantly blowing in that circuit, so more than likely the actual draw is closer to 100 watts.
The resistor I chose has an aluminum jacket with cooling fins, and I plan to attach it somewhere on the seat frame to act as a heat sink. (If it turns out the resistor is undersized and it gets too hot, will just have to get a bigger one.)
On your car if it's the seat bottom where the problem is I'd just fix or replace the heating grid. The seat bottom is actually pretty easy to deal with. The only reason for my doing this is because the problem is in the seat back and that is nearly impossible to do anything with.
I'm hoping somewhere along the line to score a junkyard driver's seat with a good seat back heater so that this jerry-rigged "solution" will just be temporary. Much easier to swap the entire seat than to get the seat back apart, but I don't know when or if I'll be able to find one.
I'll let you guys know how it works out...
