Fuel mileage keeps going up

Over the past 2-3 months I've made several trips from home in southern NH to New York City, central Long Island and upstate NY. The NYC/LI runs are 430 to 520 miles round trip and upstate NY is 760. Each trip my gas mileage has improved.
On each trip I get better gas mileage, to the point last night where I was thinking something was wrong with the gas gauge. On the way back from NYC last night the odo was at at about 1/3 full and I'd gone 346 miles. This was a mix of steady 75-80 mph, a few long stretches of 25-30 stop and go, bumper to bumper gridlock for 30+ minutes in Manhattan, and some erratic speeds from 40 to 70 in heavy moving traffic. Not exactly optimum conditions for good gas mileage! I filled up in CT and put in 11.1 gallons, so it worked out to 31.1 mpg. On the first of these runs back in August I was getting about 26-27 MPG. Two weeks ago I hit about 30 MPG. Driving conditions and traffic have been about the same on each trip.
This in a '96 9K with 208K miles, a Stage 1 JZW tune with a T7 BPC, running nearly worn out 16" Bridgestone RE 960AS tires. Pretty hard to complain!
