You just answered your own question. If actual consumption goes up, would you not expect the meter to reflect that?
I don't know for sure, but I'd be very surprised if the computer used the O2 sensor readings in the fuel consumption calculation. All it needs is the distance which it can get from the speedo and the fuel delivered, which it would get from the injectors and the FPR. I don't see how the oxygen content of the exhaust gases would add anything to the equation. This is all academic anyway, the meter is not the problem.
There are lots of things that could be causing the problem, the O2 sensor being one. I've personally never noticed any difference in fuel consumption when replacing an O2 sensor, but the experts say it's a prime suspect. If you search around the internet, you can find sensors fairly cheap.
