High Idle problem (Part3)
This is a continuation of an idle issue posted in an earlier thread. High idle at normal engine temp.
It was suggested by this group to clean the Throttle body and also the IAC.
So I did that this weekend and found some un-expected tidbits:
The throttle body cleaning did not help, it would still idle at around 1100RPM after the cleaning.
I then proceeded to take off the IAC and found on the top hose that connects from the IAC to the top of the throttle body a piece of air hose quick connect (the tip removed) stuck inside the hose. It looks like they
were trying to restrict the airflow to the IAC. Did not see that one coming!!!
I then took out the AIC and the rotating flap in the AIC was stuck. I was able to clean it out and got it working.
(Quickly connecting 12v to the terminal to verify the flap opening)
I then put everything together and started it up and let it warm up. The idle was now more consistent and had dropped to about
1000RPM.
I also noticed that if I unplug the little hose from the top of the throttle body that connects to the valve cover end
through a one way valve, cover the hole at the throttle body, the idle drops down to 900RPM. The arrow on the check valve
is toward the throttle body and the check valve checks ok. The bigger hose that connects to the valve cover at the same point is in good condition.
I don't expect the valve cover to hold vaccum, does that mean the IAC is not compensating?
Also there is a small set screw on the throttle body to adjust the throttle opening and I tried un-screwing it to lower the idle, but it was already barely touching the throttle lever so I could not lower the idle that way.
Bottom line is that I think I am getting closer, but still not quite there. I re-checked all the other small vacuum hoses and they looked ok.
Is there any other way to adjust the idle? I would like to get at 800 to 850 if possible.
Any other ideas that I should try?
Appreciate all your suggestions so far.
Sorry for the long post.
Thanks
Tony
