I took a look at it today. I'm pretty sure that "nut" is 27mm. You won't be able to get a socket on it however, because there's an extrusion from the trans case that will get in the way. I can't remember how it works, even though I have had that all apart, but it appears the extrusion is meant to prevent that nut from turning. The fact that it sits in there loose and that there's a hold-down on it makes me think that unscrewing it is not the way to get it out. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
