It's probably a bad bulb. The correct replacement is a 2721, which is a small 1.2 watt bulb available at any auto parts store. A 2721LL (LL for long life) would be better unless you like doing car chores.
It's been so long that I don't remember how I accessed the bulb. I recall only that it was easy. One of the following will probably work:
1. Pop off the clear cover (flat blade screwdriver, the smaller the better)that is over PRND321. There's spot at the front of the cover (the end nearest the cubby) where you insert the blade and gently pry.
-OR-
2. Remove the plastic cover at the base of the shifter. To do that set the hand brake, turn to the key to the ON position and put the shifter at the "1" position. At the top center of the cover is a screw (probably a small torx screw). The screw might be hiding behind a small round plastic cover that you can pop off with a small screwdriver or the tip of a knife. You don't have to removed the cover at the base of the shifter, just make it loose enough to lift a few inches so you can get to the socket.
I think method #2 was what I did, I just can't remember for sure.
Directly below the speedometer is a display that indicates the transmission's position, so the shifter illumination is redundant. I fixed mine anyway. The brightness of the shifter light is controlled by the dimmer switch.
