June, as much as it's a good idea to trust your mechanic and stay with him, you might want to get another opinion about the transmission on the side.
From what I have gleaned on here, the manual transmissions are far closer to bulletproof than those in say the older C900 Saabs, and although 192,000 is a lot of miles it still doesn't make sense that the transmission is going bad.
Does it have all the oil it should have in it? A leak and running with it severely low would of course mean trouble.
You could try calling the outfit Ericsson Industries, somewhere in Connecticut, and describe as well as you can what you're hearing and when. They know these trannies well (and also rebuild them) and could offer some helpful observations. I don't know the number but an internet search should find them.
Others on here may chime in.
Doing rear seal is easy when a transmission is out, has to come out to do it which is why people usually just live with them leaking.
The head gasket isn't easier with the transmission out, in fact it's harder since the head is usually used to anchor a beam that keeps the engine up in place when the tranny is out of the car. Wait till it starts to leak if ever, would be my advice.
No rust to speak of on car body I hope? If so, weigh your costs with that in mind.
