Fronts and rears are different. They don't suffer much at all from wear, mainly stiffened up from the years and the elements.
Erik's pot metal piece sounds like my most recent door problem, driver front also. But mine locked and unlocked fine and opened fine from inside. It just wouldn't OPEN using the outside lever, except it would if I only left it closed just to the first click. Kept animals and the worst of the weather out but had to fix it.
What I found was, the little dog-leg lever of potmetal that actually reached out and pulled the latch lever had a hairline stress crack, but had just enough strength left in it to give the lever a weak pull.
It unscrewed from the back of the outside door handle, one phillips screw, and swapped over from junkyard car handle onto mine.
I don't see any potmetal piece that would affect locking as much as you say yours is affected. Yeah, the little ball swivel if broken off back of lock cylinder would stop unlocking, but only when battery was dead, or if your central locking wouldn't trigger the driver door motor, or if the driver door motor ALSO was bad. You might find that I guess. But even with both swivel ball and central locking broken you still should be able to pull the lock button up and push it down, manually.
I'd link to my recent very detailed post about this but I gotta go. Click on "More from RayF" in the top lines of this post and you should be able to find it, in April I think.
