I haven't seen a failure but have heard about them. I had an 89 that a PO had converted to 5spd without changing the carrier bracket. The resulting misalignment made a mess of the stub shaft and it's associated bearings and seals-- not to mention some serious vibration. I got all the right pieces in and reseated the stub shaft bearing in JB Weld. Intermediate shaft and carrier bearing had survived and were OK. Fix was still good 60k later at 255 when rust killed the car. I also rebuilt the transmission on an 88T and replaced the carrier bearing while I was at it but I don't think it was necessary. My 96 auto with over 200k didn't show any serious wear in either the shaft or bearing .
I think Yaofeng from the old days had intermediate shaft trouble. Probably in the archives.
I snapped an axle in my dad's 61 96 2 stroke when I was 16 by mercilessly horsing it.
