It won't be good news if it's your problem but one of the Achilles heels of this car is, a tendency to rust in the frame of the windshield, and the pan below the frame.
Pull the wipers and the black plastic panel that's there and you will get a look at what, on an older car, can be a mess of rusty metal. Pull that trim piece around the windshield back up a little, from the split at bottom center, and you may find rust-through in its trough.
It can get so bad that windshields no longer have any support at bottom edge and crack because of it.
Some on here have actually paid to have windshields removed, had a body shop fab and weld in new metal.
One of the causes, other than bad design, is, when a windshield is replaced often the trim used doesn't seal well to the glass. It's supposed to send water coming down windshield out onto that plastic pan but water leaks behind trim and makes havoc.
I have one 9000 that shows a tiny bit of wetness in carpet at times. I expect I'll be pulling that tray. What I intend to do about it is, grind and knock most of the rust off and then coat, and fill any holes, with 3M body panel adhesive epoxy. Paint after too. I think that's tough enough stuff to work and keep future rust at bay for a few years.
