Sounds like a small amount of oil being vaporized by dripping onto a hot piece of the exhaust system. A likely spot is the front left corner of the engine, where the valve cover likes to seep and drip onto the exhaust manifold. You will not be able to smell an internal head gasket leak, the fumes go out the tailpipe.
