Am closing up after a head gasket job and had the intake manifold fully off the car, disconnected throttle cable, kickdown cable (it's automatic) and cruise control cable.
They're all back on now and it was no picnic so I'll explain what I ran into for anyone else on the same road:
Taking kickdown off I daubed its sleeve and clamping bolt all over with wite-out (you can still find this at stationery shelves) so if it slipped I'd still see setting. Actually nothing moved at all so it went back just where it was. One 13mm nut off back. Its top end has a pin mounted on a spring clip that hooks onto the shank of its end; Hold cams at wide-open throttle, undo that clip, swivel it 90 degrees and pull it and attached pin out. Cable is now free. Reinstall clip on cable so as not to lose it, nut too.
I found without that kickdown cable there (on autos) you can use where it attached as a pry point to use a screwdriver or something to hold throttle open, which helps on releasing the other two cables. You need to have lots of slack to remove those two, so the drums on their ends can turn 90 degrees to slip out the side of the plastic cams. (Cable goes thru a slot there.)
The main throttle cable's drum end is steel and it had corroded so over 19 years it didn't want to turn in the plastic. Its ends stick out just past the plastic cam so I grabbed it with a small vise grips and locked down, then oiled it and twisted it around some and it freed up. All with cam held at WOT. Then swiveled it the 90 degrees and poked it sideways out of the cam. Note the big steel clip that holds the curved elbow at end of cable into the steel bracket. Pry or pull the clip straight up and reinstall it so it doesn't go wandering off.
Ditto for cruise control cable. Its end tho is stainless steel and spring on cam is easier than that on main throttle.
Where cruise control plastic end comes thru the steel plate that holds the cable housing back, it has two spring ears that pop out to hold it in place, and the factory installed a tiny zip tie run in thru those two ears to keep them from accidentally unclipping. You need to snip that to remove it but you'll need a new one same size to use on reinstall.
That last is important. A few years ago I rescued two guys in a beat NG900 that was pulled in after hours at a gas station near my job. The car was racing at random uncontrollably, risking death or motor blow-up. It had the same setup and the problem was that clip, not having a zip tie thru it. It would pull out and somehow cable was getting pulled on without any rhyme or reason.
