My '97 has a similar problem, which unfortunately persisted after replacing the old condenser which had mashed-up fins. I also installed a new condenser fan. (I notice the fan only covers like 1/2 the condenser area and have been wondering if I can fit a second fan in there but there's almost no room.)
Cleaning the contacts in the fan's electrical connector raised the fan speed which helped, but the AC is still weak when it's really hot out (like 90 degrees or more). It seems the condenser just can't shed the heat fast enough on that car.
In contrast my '95, which of course has the same AC system, is nice and cold even on the hottest days.
