My old 34R battery was polite enough to last until I could check out the Labor Day sales. I found Optima Red Tops 30% off at Pep Boys. No, I don't work for them, don't own their stock and I'm not a fan boy.
The 34/78DT fits my '96 which still has the original cables and hold-down clamp. The ground cable was just long enough to fit without re-routing.
The store had the 34R in stock, but it was made over a year ago. The 34/78DT I bought has a 8/17 sticker.
Why the difference in freshness? Maybe it's just a fluke. I looked in only 1 store. My theory is that there's relatively low demand for the 34R, so inventories of it tend to be older.
Regardless, it pays to look at the stickers and date stamps when comparing the group sizes that are known to fit.
