I've had a few 9000's, including a '91 Turbo that required a new slave cylinder, a new clutch master, and a new high-pressure hydraulic line, all at different times. The hydraulic line on your invoice may not be the high-pressure line, that runs through the firewall from the clutch master to the slave cylinder. I developed a pinhole leak in mine and could see it shooting fluid when the clutch was depressed.
The leaking from the bell housing that occurs from a bad slave cylinder is not a squirt that suddenly appears when the clutch is depressed. Instead, hydraulic (brake) fluid escapes from the slave cylinder and accumulates in the bell housing, then drips out slowly. So the advice to park over a piece of cardboard helps you pinpoint that it's coming from the bell housing. Having said that, the bell housing is a low point in the powertrain, and many sources of oil leakage from higher up, such as a valve cover gasket or head gasket leak on the driver's side of the engine could produce oil and grime on the bell housing. If this were the case, you'd notice oil and grime on the driver's end of the cylinder head.
When my clutch slave failed, the amount of hydraulic fluid on the driveway was quite noticeable - probably a few tablespoons.
