Limp Home Issue and Throttle Cable Removal

I have a 93 CSE with TCS and in order to replace a leaking shift shaft seal, I removed the throttle cable from the throttle body. There are two places to do that. One is to remove a clip on the throttle cable housing with cable from a bracket on the throttle body and the other removes only the cable from the throttle arm. Because it looked simpler to remove the clip that held the cable housing, that was my approach but it involved pulling against a spring internal to the throttle body. I had the battery disconnected and assumed this would not create any issues. Please no ASSUME jokes, I get it... When I rolled the car out of the garage, everything was great for a minute, then it went into limp home mode.
I looked for vacuum leaks and lines to safety and control valves but all look good. So my question is whether pulling on the cable against the internal spring of the ETB is enough to disturb the calibration of the ETB. FWIW, if I disconnect and reconnect the battery, it does not start in limp home, it takes a block (or less) to get into this mode.
Thanks,
Dick
