Intermittent Tachometer 1994 9000 Aero Posted by PioneerRT909 [Email] (#3174) [Profile/Gallery] (more from PioneerRT909) on Wed, 23 Aug 2023 13:47:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
For a few months, my tachometer has been intermittent. When cold, it sits at 0 RPM. Sometimes, usually after the car has warmed up, it drops to 0 RPM at idle, but comes back to life when the RPM is above 1500 or so. I confirmed with a multimeter that the gauge was receiving voltage at it's power and data pins, and that the voltage varied with engine RPM as it should. So I assume the problem is in the tachometer gauge unit itself.
The ground is good and none of the pins are shorted to ground. After removing the tachometer board from the dash cluster, I reflowed a couple solder joints that looked cracked and reinstalled- it worked perfectly! I then let it sit in the car for a day and it was back to the old, intermittent state. What I gathered is that anything which heats up the board (engine temp or a soldering iron) seems to make it temporarily function. Any ideas as to what could be the issue? I plan to start by reflowing all remaining solder joints on the board. Thank you!
