Idle overspeed

My '94 Aero automatic's idle speed began "racing" spontaneously from
(a normal 1,000 rpm )to 1500-2000 rpm ! Very unsettling in commute
traffic. The extreme engine speed will sit at a constant 1500 rpm,
but after stabbing the pedal to inspire a "kick-down", the revs
actually began ranging from 1500-2000 ! Any ideas?
