I don't have a boost controller on my car. I have an Abbott setup for my (former) LPT whereby boost is controlled mechanically via a new wastegate actuator at 0.8 bar. No BPC involved under 0.8 bar.
Most guys with boost control are running at almost 1 bar. I was actually worried about the 0.8 bar wastegate I have; I personally would seriously think before raising boost to 1 bar without BPC.
As for safety systems. Knock protection is provided through igntion timing as well as fueling. Reducing boost is the third method and as many say (although I am not sure) the last resort.
On the other hand, the advantages of manual boost control as opposed to BPC are faster spoolup (as the BPC tries to have slow progressive spoolup to avoid surprising old ladies) as well as full boost in 1st and 2nd gear which is limited by the Trionic (again for the same reason). In second gear, this is an important difference.
Now if you want to raise max boost to just under the fuel cut (currently it has more leeway) and also marginally improve spoolup, try tightening the wastegate a little bit -not too much or you will hit fuel cutoff. This is a mehtod I can recommend for certain.
I can also say that 0.8 bar without BPC is sane. 1 bar seems also to be OK, but again there are fewer people doing this, whereas everyone with Abbott upgrades has base boost at 0.8 bar (meaning no APC control under this level).
