I had a similar problem with an '89 900 T. When I started
it cold, it was fine. If I drove enough to get it warm, then
stopped briefly, it would die immediately after starting. It
would turn over and seem to start, but then die. It also
happened spontaneously a few times while driving. The car
had about 120K on it then.
The problem turned out to be a faulty air mass meter. I don't
know much about the electronics, but it makes sense that if
something is trying to set the right fuel mixture and is being
told that there's no air, it would decide to add no fuel in
order to get the right ratio.
PS - It actually felt like there was no gas and I tried pumping the
pedal vigorously, which didn't help at all. I learned later that
the old days of an "accelerator pump", which spritzes in some gas
as soon as you step on the pedal just to get things primed, are
gone so my pumping was doing nothing.
